Pre-shading Tutorial

The basis of this particular technique is to add layers of different colors to create a more complex look on your models.

The theory is pretty simple: a divergent color of your desired coat color is applied first as a base before the final coat is applied. For example, a dark grey can be added to white when trying to paint the armor of an Rx-78-2.

First off, lets begin by painting the piece with the desired piece color, let say black (note: to do this technique, airbrushes are a must).  After painting the piece into that particular single color, paint with your airbrush moving in a circular motion where you want the shading to be more apparent. Continue applying the paint and try to make the center of the desired shaded region the brightest and become darker as it leaves the center.

Finally, we will put the top coat on. Be sure the paint layer is thin, as a thick top coat might result in single tone color instead of a dual color shade.
